A Volunteer’s Perspective
By Tori Bertran

I wish I had more time.

And I don’t just mean that I could use an extra 3-4 hours in the day to handle my job, my commitments, my social life, my chores, and the million little things that keep us all busy. I mean I wish I had more time to make a difference, to effect real change in a positive way. I almost feel like I started too late in life, and now I have to “catch up,” as it were, to what I should have been doing all along for – and with – the LGBT community.

That is largely why I volunteer for the Aqua Foundation for Women.

When I volunteer, I become an actual part of the process by which change happens. Events don’t just happen on their own: a dedicated team of highly motivated and flexible people work hours behind the scenes to make sure everything works as it should.

Volunteers at Family BBQ

Did you and your family enjoy the LGBT Family Picnic? It wouldn’t have happened without volunteers giving their time (and sweat!) to make that happen. Kids and parents got to meet families just like theirs for a day, probably unlike any other they have all year. Without the team of volunteers, burgers wouldn’t have been cooked, games wouldn’t have been played, and trash wouldn’t have been picked up. In short, there would have been no event.

The same is true of every single other event the Aqua Foundation puts together, from the Aqua Affair fundraiser to Aqua Girl’s week-long series of events, both of which help fund the scholarships and grants that go out every year to LBT women, to TransCon, an event that highlights issues important to the Trans community. When I volunteer, I know those events wouldn’t have happened without people like me to make them happen. Scholarships wouldn’t have happened. Grants to organizations like Safe Schools South Florida and the Pride Center wouldn’t have happened. I go home exhausted, sure, but knowing I’ve done something good.

Now, I’d be lying if I didn’t say there was something in it for me too.  First off, volunteering is fun. I’ve gotten to know most of the “regulars,” and many of them have become great friends of mine.  It’s no exaggeration to say that I’ve made more friends volunteering in the last two years than I have over the last ten. It hardly even seems like work when you’re surrounded by friends.

I also get to attend those events!  Believe me, I’ll be cashing in this benefit when Aqua Girl rolls around and I get to attend the events I’ve worked on after my shift is over.

Lastly, I’ve met and become friends with some of the most influential members of the South Florida gay community. A little networking never hurt, right? More than once, I’ve reached out to those people when I’ve needed help or advice on a professional or personal problem. And they’ve always been there for me.

In fact, I’ve gotten so much out of my relationship with the Aqua Foundation, and I am so proud of their work, that as soon as I could I became a proud member, and have recently renewed that membership. It’s a small price to pay.

Family BBQ Recap
By Elsa Roberts
Stormy clouds and strong winds made it seem like a less than ideal day for a Family BBQ early on the morning of February the 26th, but, by mid-morning, the clouds were gone and we were greeted by a perfect Florida spring day. And what better place to spend it than out at the park with other LGBT families? Our pavilion at Oleta Park was soon packed with families getting to know each other better and chowing down on delicious grilled fare. Kids ran around, happily playing with each other, relaxing with other families like their own. They were especially excited for the face-painting and many emerged as some type of insect or animal; butterflies, lady bugs, and tigers were popular choices.

While the kids enjoyed themselves, their parents also had a chance to relax and connect with other LGBT parents, sharing stories and experiences. Seeing so many LGBT families together, enjoying themselves, was truly an amazing experience. Attendance was at least double that of last year – every last hamburger and hotdog was consumed by the end of the day!

Families lingered into the evening, enjoying the fresh breeze blowing in from the water and taking the opportunity to socialize just a little longer. As clean-up began, a few families were still trading stories and life experiences. We can’t wait for next year’s family BBQ and we know you can’t either!

Scholarship Spotlight on Linda Lathroum
By Linda Lathroum, Ph.D.

Ever since I completed my bachelor’s degree in music therapy and became a Board Certified Music Therapist, I have had the goal of obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Therapy. I sought to expand my knowledge in the field, to pursue research in the area, and to eventually be both a clinician and a college professor.

I am so grateful to Aqua Foundation for having selected me for their scholarship program. In doing so, they were instrumental to me fulfilling my life-long dream of completing my Ph.D. in music therapy. The financial and emotional support provided has been invaluable.

First of all, the Aqua scholarship provided financial support. I simply would not have been able to afford attending a private university, such as University of Miami, if it had not been for the financial support provided by Aqua over the past two years. This scholarship allowed me the financial means to have more time to dedicate to my dissertation in order to be able to complete my degree.

Secondly, Aqua provided me with an opportunity to network with other LBT women. Several fellow scholarship recipients have become very good friends. At various Aqua events, I have been able to meet other professionals who have shared their experiences. Many members of the Board have also reached out to me, offering their guidance.

Most importantly, Aqua paired me with a mentor. My mentor provided much support, especially during the most difficult times of completing my dissertation. Meeting my mentor monthly allowed me to stay on track and have accountability towards completing my goal. My mentor served as a role model to me.

I feel deeply honored and very grateful to have been awarded this scholarship and to be a part of Aqua Foundation. I look forward to my continued involvement with this wonderful organization. I am especially looking forward to participating in the mentoring program, this time as a mentor to other women who are pursuing their studies.

A Look Back at Ally Awards
 By Elsa Roberts, Administrative Manager

So often, we don’t stop to appreciate the work our allies have done or the strides we have made toward equality, but Aqua Ally Awards was not one of those nights. On Friday, February 10th, we spent an amazing night at the Bacardi building thanking two amazing allies of our community, Howard Simon, Executive Director of the Florida ACLU, and Patricia Ireland, former President of NOW. Ireland arrived early and mingled with our guests, chatting and getting to know everyone better. She truly made the night of many women there who were able to meet her for the first time, myself included. Her acceptance speech was riveting; she reminded us all of the important work that has been done in Florida pushing forward toward equality, such as the adoption fight that just ended with lesbian and gay parents being recognized as equally capable of caring for children and adopting them. But she also reminded us that the fight isn’t over.

Howard Simon’s speech was equally inspiring and humbling. He emphasized that he was not alone in fighting for LGBT rights, that the ACLU as a whole was behind us. When he ended his speech by reminding us that “equality is inevitable,” the room erupted in applause. Attendees spent the rest of the evening visiting and getting to know one another better, as the Awards brought together diverse elements of our community who don’t always come out to the same events. Forging these kinds of new relationships in our community and celebrating our allies is one of the many ways we will continue to Lead, Build, and Transform South Florida!

When We All Get Together

By Bishop S.F. Makalani-MaHee

I recently viewed an awesome sight, and felt as if I was experiencing the realization of Saint Martin’s dream. I saw black folk and white folk, womyn and men, queer and straight, old and young, cuttin’ a rug, enjoying the rhythm of soul music, and the decadence of soul food during the Black Gay Pride Festivities cosponsored by the Aqua Foundation for Women. It was quite a sight. For a moment there was no racism, there was no classism, and there was no sexism; our gayness wasn’t a white man disease. For just a single moment in time there was heaven on earth and we were free from the labels that bind us.

I felt blessed to watch extraordinary individuals demonstrate what it will take for the world to be at peace; which is, very simply, valuing and affirming what every individual brings to the table. The music wasn’t “too black,” and the clothes weren’t “too ghetto” for the white folk in the house. Likewise for the black folk, the venues weren’t too high-brow or high-priced.  From the city of Wilton Drive down to South Beach, the community was making a joyful noise that everyone was celebrating.

As we sat and beheld this beautiful sight of everyone dancing, mixing, mingling, and enjoying themselves together in harmony, I remembered the words of poet/prophet Alix Olsen, who once said, “Skin to skin is where this revolution gonna begin.”

We did not have to justify who we are or why we are. The allies that turned out to support us, even those who were not same-gender-loving or African-American came for no other reason but to support the cause, brewing trust and goodwill. We were willing to suspend the disbelief of our perception of “other,” if only for a moment, and open up to the possibility of human sameness. There were no enemies in those moments, as we existed within the joy of those moments.

There is a story of how the master teacher, Jesus, was teaching when his Mother and Brothers showed up. However, they could not get to him and had to ask one of his Disciples to notify him of their arrival. Upon receiving the message that his Mother and Brothers were present, his response was very simply “Who is my Mother? Who is my Brother?” He concluded that, indeed, those who share the same journey of diversity, inclusion, and empowerment were his family.  We are that family in the house of diversity, inclusivity, and empowerment. For during this time we were not a house divided against itself. For this was a time we all got together and danced with one another and cheered one another on. And, most of all, during this time we loved on one another.

This time will remain special because it was the time of reunification. A time where we saw and felt that we may not look like each other, but we are family none-the-less. We may very well be dysfunctional at times, but we are family. We saw that we can be “we” and not “them” and “us.”  The more we get together, the more we will realize that we are family, and that we can, and should, create this level of magic often, understanding that we are all in this together.

Continue to walk in the light, redefine your faith and remember it’s still all about the rhythm.

Aqua Accomplishes a Lot in South Florida

By Robin Schwartz, Executive Director

Looking back on 2011, Aqua Foundation has accomplished a great deal with your help!

  • We supported 11 LBT women in their goal to obtain higher education
  • We matched each scholarship recipient with a mentor
  • We funded projects that will increase the wellness and equality of LBT women in 2012, such as a LBT health directory, a study of transgender women’s health issues, outreach programming for PFLAG, and young women’s programming from Safe Schools of South Florida
  • We had our first Family BBQ
  • We held our second TransCon, a conference to address the needs of the Transgender community
  • We built our financial support from individuals by increasing our membership from 15 to 150 members
  • We received sponsorship from Wells Fargo for three new scholarships
  • We established a Family Advisory Committee
  • We created Aqua Men so our gentlemen friends can support our cause
  • We hosted many events to build community
  • We held our 12th Annual Aqua Girl
  • We added a community resource page to our website

In 2012, we are continuing to Lead, Build, and Transform South Florida, but to do this we need each of you to stay involved and get your friends and family to get involved. Mark Twain said, “A nation is only an individual multiplied”. Our community is only each of YOU multiplied. Let’s be a community of respect, kindness, love and giving.
