Aqua
Girl Celebrates
Six years with record breaking attendance
and monies raised
(Miami, Florida)
South Florida’s Women’s Community Fund
is proud to announce the success of Aqua Girl 2006. The fundraiser
celebrated its sixth year surpassing all expectations. This
year’s attendance was a whopping 7,600 plus. The weekend
crowd was an incredible array of gay women from all over the
world. The Aqua Girl committee worked diligently to make this
year’s events bigger and better than ever before.
There was something for everyone which including an amazing
comedy show at the newly restored Colony Theatre featuring
national comedienne Lisa Koch and indie rocker,
Steph Taylor. The ladies laughed all way
to the swanky exclusive oceanfront nightclub, Pearl. The dance
parties ranged from elegant to sexy, and to many the ocean
side pool party – was the weekend’s highlight
with thousands of women who love women scantily clad in their
swimsuits under the Miami sun.
In addition to the dance parties, pool party, and Comedy ,
this year’s jazz brunch, and poolside tea dance, were
all big hits.. with attendees and talent coming from all over
the world, including legendary DJ/Producer Tracy Young,
who kept the floor shaking Saturday night at the Candyland
main event.
Many might not recall this weekend festival started
as a fundraising dance by a group of dedicated community-minded
women from Miami and New York. Wonderfully enough, it has
successfully grown into the amazing weekend it is today. “Proudly,
[our] event has been singled out as the nation’s largest,
non-profit women’s weekend in the United States,”
said Clara Eshkenazi.
Produced by The Women’s Community Fund, and led by Aqua
Girl Co-Chairs Vivian Lamadrid and Soraya Swingen and the
dedicated all-volunteer Aqua Girl Steering Committee, Aqua
Girl has become one of Miami’s most significant fundraising
weekends. “This year we raised over $120,000. We couldn’t
be happier, stated co-chair Lamadrid.”
In past years, guests have hailed from around the globe, to
attend this colorful celebration where 100 percent of all
net proceeds benefit the not-for-profit Women’s Community
Fund (WCF), whose primary mission is to promote the equality,
strength, health and visibility of gay, lesbian, bisexual
and transgender women through education, awareness and a grants
program.
WCF President Alison Burgos, also a renowned activist
lead the talented group of community minded Committee members
within the gay community to make sure Aqua Girl 2006 kept
true to its reputation: an annual celebration of culture,
diversity, and networking for an extremely important cause.
“We work for months to produce this weekend because
it’s so paramount for the Women’s Community Fund.
It’s about having a great time, sharing and meeting
women from all over the world and educating and empowering
our community.” said Burgos.
