MIAMI WOMEN'S
COMMUNITY FUND AWARDS $15K IN GRANTS

(Miami, Florida – April 19, 2006)

It's called the Women's Community Fund, and you might not know about them yet, but they are quietly becoming one of Miami's biggest power-hitters among gay and lesbian charitable organizations. This year's total of 15-Thousand Dollars in grant awards marks a milestone for the two year-old group of professional women who donate their time and services to fund raising efforts on behalf of a variety of key issues in the lesbian and gay communities - including health, education and the arts.

"We are especially proud of what our funding will accomplish this year," says WCF Chair and Founder, Alison Burgos. The three recipients each awarded a 5-thousand dollar grant include:
The Fourth Annual Lavender Footlights Festival dedicated to America’s emerging and recognized lesbian and gay authors, and held May 3-7, at Dot 51 Gallery in the Miami Design District
Women’s programming at this year’s 8th Annual Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF), held April 21-30 in South Beach and Ft.
Lauderdale. According to MGLFF Program Director Carol Coombes, “Quality women’s films are more numerous and prominent this year than ever before, thanks to the generosity of our WCF grant.”
Pridelines Youth Services, Inc.’s “Becoming Women Program,” a series of workshops aimed at assisting LBTQ (Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgendered, Questioning) youth with life skills in health, etiquette, education, and leadership. The program began in March, and will continue through the end of the year.

Burgos attributes the growing success of the organization to the hard work and dedication of a few, and the growing awareness and generosity of many friends and supporters in the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender) community. "Women's organizations have had to struggle in the past, not only to reach out to other women but to create a philanthropic base - but I think we're beginning to turn an important corner and that feels very rewarding."

The mission of the Women's Community Fund is to promote the strength, health, equality and visibility of South Florida lesbian, bisexual and transgender women.
