AFW Scholars
Class of 2007
This year the Aqua Foundation for Women had a variety of
wonderful applicants for our AFW Family of Scholarships Program.
Thanks to them and to the careful selection process of our
Scholarship Committee, we are proud to present our 2007 AFW
Scholars

Family of Scholarships $3,000 scholarship recipients

Enbar Cohen from
Aventura will be attending Miami Dade College. She will
undertake a double major in Political Science and Marketing
with a minor in Psychology. She is a graduate of Dr.
Michael M. Krop Senior High School in Miami. In the future
she plans to intern with local government, do freelance
marketing and run for the Senate in New York in 2020.
She works with GLSEN and speaks of LGBTQ issues for teacher
training programs. |

Chelita Dubois from
Sunrise will be attending Nova Southeastern University.
As a graduate student, she will major in Psychology with
a Health Concentration. In 2002 she was named the Alabama
Junior College Division 1 Women’s Basketball Coach
of the Year. She plans to be a resident psychologist
at a sports medicine clinic and to run her own body rehabilitation
center. She served as a student volunteer with the Valuing
Our Families Conference and has volunteered for Special
Olympics. |

Jodi Savitz from
Plantation will be attending Northwestern University
in Evanston, IL. She will major in Neuroscience/Biology
with a minor in Gender/Sexuality/Women’s Studies
and Theater. She is a graduate of Nova High School in
Davie. She plans to attend medical or graduate school
to study neurology and conduct research in gender and
sexuality. She initiated Nova’s RED backpack campaign
for World AIDS Day and worked as a summer intern in the
office for the Aqua Foundation for Women. |

Aimee Shand from
Fort Lauderdale will be attending Indiana University.
She will undertake graduate studies leading to a PhD
in Gender Studies with a focus in sexualities, desires
and identities. She holds a Masters degree from Florida
Atlantic University and plans to become a women’s
studies professor, feminist theorist and activist. She
developed a curriculum for the first support group for
female same-sex domestic violence victims in Indianapolis
and is active with the Human Rights Campaign. |

Weedlen Rendel from
Miami will defer entry into Miami Dade College until
the spring semester. She will major in Psychology. She
is an active volunteer with Pridelines Youth Services,
Equality Florida, the Gay Advisory Board Youth Partnership
with The Alliance and the National Gay and Lesbian Task
Force. |
Suzanne Gallagher Scholarship $1,000 scholarship
recipient

Anna Xiques from
Miami will be attending Florida International University.
She plans to major in Psychology. After obtaining her
BA, she plans to attend law school and intern with
the National Center for Lesbian Rights. She has served
as a South Florida Field Intern for Equality Florida. |
The scholarship awards range from $3,000 to $1,000 and are
given to encourage present and future leadership for the
benefit of LBT communities. Each scholarship recipient has
been paired with a mentor for guidance and support as part
of our new AFW Mentoring Program. We wish
the AFW Scholars all the best as they start this new phase
in their academic pursuits.
The AFW has also been blessed by the generous establishment
this year of the Anita Priest Memorial Scholarship.
We deeply thank all those who have contributed to this promising
endeavor.
